Key takeaways
- No law prescribes an excuse letter. Your company's code of conduct sets the call-in rule, the deadline for the letter and the proof needed, so read the attendance section of your handbook first.
- Write facts, not drama: the date, the reason, when you notified your supervisor, the attachment, and how to charge the day. One page is enough.
- Unexcused or repeated absences and tardiness can lead to discipline, and in serious cases to dismissal for gross and habitual neglect of duties under Art. 297 (formerly 282) of the Labor Code, but only after the two written notices and a chance to be heard.
- If you are sick for more than three days, tell your employer within five calendar days of the start of your sickness so your SSS sickness benefit is not cut short (RA 11199, Sec. 14).
- For a planned absence, file the request before the day; for sick, vacation or emergency leave forms, use the leave letter generator instead.
The three ways to use this excuse letter template
| If you want to… | Choose | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| See how a finished letter reads before writing your own | See a filled example | Maria Clara S. Dela Cruz's letter to her operations manager, in the Absent, Late or Advance version |
| Type your dates and reason and print or email a clean letter today | Fill it online | A one-page letter on long bond with the reason, the call-in line, the attachment and your leave request already worded |
| Write it by hand, or keep a stack of forms in the office | Blank, to fill by hand | The same layout with ruled blanks and a "Received / approved by" line for your supervisor |
Pick the pill that matches your situation before you type. Absent is for a day you already missed. Late arrival is for a day you clocked in after the start of your shift. Advance notice is for a day you know you will miss. Each version changes the subject line, the opening sentence and the closing request, and the Tagalog tab rewrites the whole letter in the polite Filipino used in Philippine offices. What you type stays in your browser.
What an excuse letter for work must say
Supervisors read dozens of these a month, and HR files them in your 201 file next to your daily time records. A good letter answers the questions they will ask anyway, in the order they ask them. If any of these is missing, expect a follow-up message, and sometimes a request for a longer written explanation.
- The date of the letter, written in full, and the addressee: your immediate supervisor by name and position.
- A subject line that names the date: "Re: Excuse letter for my absence on October 21, 2026."
- The exact day or days you missed, or for tardiness, your shift start and the time you actually arrived.
- The reason, stated in one or two factual sentences. A diagnosis is not required; "high fever, advised by a doctor to rest" is enough.
- When and how you told your supervisor (text, call, chat), because most company codes punish the failure to call in more heavily than the absence.
- The proof attached, such as a medical certificate, hospital receipt, barangay certification or a screenshot of a weather or transport advisory.
- How the day should be treated: charged to sick or vacation leave credits, or as leave without pay.
- A short apology and thanks, then your signature over your printed name in capitals.
Excuse letter for being absent from work: sample and tips
This is the most common version: you could not report on a working day and you are writing on the day you return. Write it before your supervisor asks, attach your proof, and say whether you want the day paid out of your leave credits. Keep the reason short. HR does not need the full story of your night at the emergency room, only enough to judge whether the absence was justified under company rules.

Re: Excuse letter for my absence on October 21, 2026
Dear Ms. Garcia:
I respectfully submit this letter to explain my absence from work on October 21, 2026. I was unable to report due to illness. On the evening of October 20, I developed a high fever and body aches, and the doctor at our barangay health center advised me to rest at home for one day.
I sent you a text message at 6:15 AM on October 21 to inform you that I could not report. Attached is my medical certificate for your reference. I respectfully request that my absence be charged to my sick leave credits.
I apologize for any inconvenience my absence caused the team, and I thank you for your understanding.
Respectfully yours,
MARIA CLARA S. DELA CRUZ
Customer Service Representative
The generator's Absent version prints this letter with a "Received / approved by" line at the bottom.
- Write on the day you return, or the next working day at the latest. A letter submitted a week later looks like an afterthought, even when the reason was real.
- If you were out for two or more days, give the first and last date ("from October 20 to October 22, 2026"), not "last week".
- Attach the medical certificate in the original or a clear copy. Many handbooks require one for sickness lasting two or more consecutive days; read your own rule.
- If you have no leave credits left, ask for leave without pay rather than leaving the request blank; HR will otherwise apply the default in the code of conduct.
Excuse letter for being late: what to write when you clocked in after your shift
Tardiness is usually handled with a deduction from pay and, after a set number of incidents in a month, a warning. A single late arrival rarely needs a letter, but supervisors ask for one when the delay was long, when you missed a client call or a shift handover, or when you are close to the monthly limit in the code of conduct. The letter should give your scheduled start, the time on the biometrics or bundy clock, and the cause.
October 23, 2026
Dear Ms. Garcia:
I respectfully submit this letter to explain why I reported late for work on October 22, 2026. My shift started at 8:00 AM, but I arrived at 9:40 AM due to a transport disruption and bad weather. Heavy rain flooded España Boulevard that morning, the jeepneys on my route stopped running, and I had to wait for the water to subside before I could take the MRT from North Avenue.
I sent you a text message at 7:20 AM to tell you that I was stranded and would be late. I have attached a screenshot of the PAGASA rainfall advisory for that morning. To avoid a repeat, I will leave home earlier on days with a rainfall warning.
I understand that the time I missed may be deducted from my pay in line with company policy. Thank you for your understanding.
Respectfully yours,
MARIA CLARA S. DELA CRUZ
Do not offer to "make up" the lost minutes by staying late unless your company has a written flexitime policy. Article 88 of the Labor Code (Undertime not offset by overtime) says undertime work on any particular day shall not be offset by overtime work on any other day, so an offer to stay late does not cancel the deduction or the tardiness record. Ask instead whether your company allows you to charge the lost hours to leave credits; some do, in half-day or hourly blocks.
Advance excuse letter: asking to be excused before the day
When you already know you will be absent, such as a school graduation, a court hearing, a government appointment or a scheduled procedure, the polite and safe course is to ask in writing before the date. An approved advance request turns a possible unexcused absence into an authorized one, and it gives your team lead time to adjust the schedule. Most handbooks set a minimum notice period for planned absences (often a few working days); check yours and file at least that far ahead.
October 23, 2026
Dear Ms. Garcia:
I respectfully request your approval to be excused from work on November 5, 2026, due to an urgent personal matter. I need to attend my younger sister's graduation at Southern Luzon State University in Lucban, Quezon, where I am the only family member able to go with her.
I am giving this notice in advance so that the team can plan around my absence. Before my leave, I will update my pending tickets and endorse my scheduled callbacks to my teammate, Mark Anthony P. Santos. I respectfully request that my absence be charged to my vacation leave credits.
Thank you for considering my request. I hope for your approval.
Respectfully yours,
MARIA CLARA S. DELA CRUZ
An advance excuse letter is a request, not a notice. Until your supervisor approves it, the absence is still subject to the company's rules. If you have heard nothing two working days before the date, follow up by email so there is a written record that you asked in time.
Short sample excuse letters for common reasons
The body of the letter is what changes from one reason to another. Below are short bodies you can adapt; the generator supplies the date, addressee, subject line and signature around them. Keep the reason specific and verifiable, and match the attachment to the reason.
Dear Mr. Reyes:
I respectfully submit this letter to explain my absence from work on October 19, 2026. Late on the night of October 18, my father was brought to the Quezon Medical Center in Lucena City after a mild stroke, and I travelled there at once to sign the admission papers and stay with him. I called the team hotline at 5:45 AM to report that I could not come in.
Attached is a copy of the hospital admission slip. I respectfully request that my absence be charged to my vacation leave credits. Thank you for your understanding.
Respectfully yours,
JUAN MIGUEL T. SANTIAGO
Dear Ms. Villanueva:
I respectfully submit this letter to explain my absence on September 24, 2026. Typhoon Signal No. 3 was raised over our province that morning, the ferry from Talibon to Cebu City was cancelled by the Coast Guard, and our barangay road was under knee-deep water. I informed you through our team chat at 6:00 AM.
I have attached a screenshot of the cancellation advisory. Since I have no remaining leave credits, I respectfully request that the day be treated as leave without pay.
Respectfully yours,
ROSALIE B. MENDOZA
Dear Ms. Garcia:
I respectfully request your approval to be excused from work in the morning of November 12, 2026, due to a scheduled medical appointment. My dentist in Quezon City has set the extraction of an impacted wisdom tooth at 9:00 AM, and I expect to report for work by 1:00 PM.
I will submit a medical certificate when I return. I respectfully request that the four hours be charged to my sick leave credits.
Respectfully yours,
MARIA CLARA S. DELA CRUZ

How to fill in the excuse letter generator, field by field
Your details
Type your name the way HR has it in your 201 file, with your middle initial, because the letter is matched to your attendance record by name. Use your current position title and your department or, in a BPO, your account or line of business. The date of the letter is the day you hand it in, not the day of the absence; the two dates side by side show HR how quickly you explained yourself.
Supervisor and company
Address the person who approves your attendance and leave, usually your team leader, section head or operations manager. Choose Ms. or Mr. so the salutation reads "Dear Ms. Garcia:" with a colon, as Philippine business letters do; pick Sir/Ma'am if you are writing to a role rather than a named person. Write the company's full registered name. If your handbook says excuse letters go to HR, address HR and hand a copy to your supervisor.
Dates and times
For an absence, enter the first day and, if you were out longer, the last day; for a single day leave the second date blank. For a late arrival, enter the date, the start of your shift as written in your schedule, and the time recorded by the biometrics. Do not round in your favour. HR will compare your letter with the time record, and a mismatch costs more credibility than ten minutes of tardiness.
The "how and when you told your supervisor" field is for one clause such as "I sent you a text message at 6:15 AM on October 21, 2026". If you could not call in because you were in the emergency room or had no signal, say so briefly in the details instead. Many attendance policies treat a no-call, no-show day more strictly than a reported absence.
Reason
Choose the reason that fits from the list (illness, family emergency, personal matter, transport problem or bad weather, medical appointment, or other), then add one or two sentences of facts in the details box: what happened, when, and why it kept you from reporting. You may keep medical details general. The optional third box is for the work side: what you finished, who covered for you, or what you will do differently. For tardiness, a concrete step such as leaving earlier on days with a rainfall warning reads better than a promise that it will never happen again.
Leave and attachments
Say Yes to the medical certificate only if you actually attach one; in the Advance version, Yes prints a promise to submit it when you return. Use the other attachment field for receipts, a barangay certification, a hospital admission slip or a screenshot of an advisory. Then choose how the day should be treated: sick leave, vacation leave, your available credits including service incentive leave, leave without pay, or no request so HR applies company policy. If you are unsure how many days you have left, estimate them with the leave credits calculator and ask HR to confirm.
Before you print, read the letter once aloud. If a sentence sounds like an excuse for a pattern, such as "as usual, traffic was heavy", cut it. Print on long bond (8.5 × 13 inches), sign above your printed name, attach the proof with a paper clip, and ask your supervisor to sign the "Received / approved by" line on your copy.
From the missed day to payroll: the usual timeline
Company codes differ, but the sequence below is what most Philippine employers follow. Each step leaves a record, and the excuse letter is only one of them.
Before your shift starts
Call or text your supervisor, or use the team hotline or attendance app. This is the step most often missed and most often penalised.
Day of the absence
Get proof while it is easy: a medical certificate from the clinic or health center, a receipt, a screenshot of the advisory.
Day you return
Hand in the excuse letter with attachments and file the matching leave application in the HR system. Ask for a received copy.
Within days
Your supervisor approves or disapproves; HR tags the day as excused or unexcused and charged or unpaid.
Next payroll cut-off
The day appears on your payslip as paid leave or as an absence deduction. Check it, and raise any error in writing with HR.
If the absences repeat
HR may issue a Notice to Explain. Reply in writing within the period given, attaching your earlier excuse letters.
Pay for the day you missed: leave credits, SIL and no work, no pay
The general rule in private employment is "no work, no pay": an absence is unpaid unless it is covered by paid leave under the law, your contract, your company policy or a CBA. The only paid leave the Labor Code gives all covered employees is the service incentive leave under Article 95: 5 days with pay a year once you have rendered at least one year of service, unless you already enjoy at least that much paid vacation leave or fall under an exclusion. Sick leave and vacation leave beyond that are company benefits, so the rules on medical certificates, notice and conversion to cash come from your handbook. Read the full rules on the service incentive leave page.
- Monthly basic salary
- ₱25,000.00
- Days factor (five-day week, a common payroll convention)
- 261 days a year
- Daily rate
- ₱25,000.00 × 12 ÷ 261 = ₱1,149.43
- Absence on October 21 without leave credits
- ₱1,149.43 deducted as leave without pay
- Late on October 22: shift 8:00 AM, in at 9:40 AM
- 100 minutes
- Rate per minute
- ₱1,149.43 ÷ (8 hours × 60) = ₱2.3946
- Tardiness deduction
- ₱2.3946 × 100 = ₱239.46
If Maria's absence is charged to her sick leave credits, she loses one day of credits instead of ₱1,149.43 in pay. The ₱239.46 tardiness deduction applies either way, unless company policy lets her charge the time to leave.
Your employer may use a different factor (313 days for a six-day week, or the actual working days of the month), so your payslip figures can differ by a few pesos. What matters is that the deduction matches the time actually missed. A deduction larger than the time lost, or a fine on top of the deduction, is worth questioning with HR in writing; see the Labor Code guide for the rules on wage deductions.
Is an excuse letter required by law? What the Labor Code says about absences
No statute requires an excuse letter, and none prescribes its form. Attendance is governed by your employer's code of conduct or company rules, which the employer may issue under its management prerogative as long as the rules are reasonable, made known to employees and applied fairly. That is why one company asks for a medical certificate after one sick day and another after three, and why the deadline for submitting the letter varies. The letter matters because it becomes evidence: it shows that you notified the company, gave a reason and asked for the day to be charged properly.
Legal basis: There is no statutory excuse-letter rule. Absences and tardiness are governed by the company code of conduct. Labor Code Art. 297 (formerly 282) lists the just causes for termination, including (a) serious misconduct or wilful disobedience of lawful orders connected with work and (b) gross and habitual neglect by the employee of his duties; Art. 88: undertime not offset by overtime; Art. 95: service incentive leave.
Primary sources: Labor Code (PD 442) on Lawphil
Absences become a legal issue when they pile up. Habitual absenteeism or tardiness without valid reason may be treated as gross and habitual neglect of duties under Article 297(b). The neglect must generally be both gross and habitual, so one bad week is rarely enough on its own. Ignoring a lawful, reasonable order, such as a written directive to report back, can fall under wilful disobedience in Article 297(a), and going absent without leave for an extended period is often charged as abandonment; the AWOL guide explains how that differs from an ordinary absence.
Even then, an employer cannot dismiss you on the spot. Dismissal for a just cause requires the twin-notice rule: a first written notice (the Notice to Explain) stating the specific acts and the company rule violated, a real opportunity to answer in writing and, where requested or needed, at a hearing, and a second written notice of the decision. Your past excuse letters are part of your defence at that stage, which is one more reason to write them and keep received copies. The steps are set out in full in due process in termination.
| Stage | Typical trigger | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Verbal or written reminder | First unexcused absence, or tardiness over the monthly limit | Submit the excuse letter with proof; ask for the reminder to note it |
| Written warning or reprimand | Repeated unexcused absences in a review period | Reply in writing if the warning gets the dates wrong; keep copies |
| Notice to Explain | A pattern the company treats as a possible serious offence | Answer within the period given with dates, reasons and your excuse letters |
| Suspension | Further offences under the code's schedule of penalties | Check that the penalty matches the code; ask for the decision in writing |
| Dismissal | Gross and habitual neglect, or abandonment, after due process | Get advice; the deadlines for a complaint start running at dismissal |
How attendance problems are usually escalated (company codes vary)
SSS sickness benefit: why your notice within five days matters
If your illness keeps you away for more than a few days, the excuse letter does a second job: it is your written notice to the employer for the SSS sickness benefit. Under Section 14 of the Social Security Act of 2018 (RA 11199), a member qualifies for a daily sickness benefit when the conditions below are met. Your employer pays the benefit on payday and is then reimbursed by the SSS, but only after you have used up your company paid sick leave for that year.
| Condition | What the law says | In practice |
|---|---|---|
| Contributions | At least three monthly contributions paid in the 12-month period immediately before the semester of sickness or injury | Check your contribution record in My.SSS before filing |
| Length of confinement | Confined for more than three days, in a hospital or elsewhere with SSS approval | Four days or more, at home or in a hospital |
| Notice to employer | Within five calendar days after the start of the confinement | Your excuse letter or a text or email the same week counts as notice; keep proof |
| When notice is not needed | Hospital confinement, or sickness or injury while working or on the employer's premises | Still tell HR, so the employer can file on time |
| Daily benefit | 90% of the average daily salary credit | Paid for each compensable day, up to 120 days in a calendar year |
| Paid sick leave first | The benefit starts only after the member's company paid sick leave is used up | Charge the first days to sick leave credits as usual |
SSS sickness benefit conditions (RA 11199, Sec. 14)
Late notice does not cancel the claim, but it shortens it. Where notice is required and you give it late, Section 14 treats your confinement as starting not earlier than the fifth day immediately preceding the date of notification. In plain terms, if you fell ill on October 1 and told your employer only on October 20, the SSS counts the confinement from October 15, and the earlier days are not paid. The employer, in turn, must notify the SSS within five calendar days after receiving your notice to recover the full benefit it advanced.
Legal basis: RA 11199 (Social Security Act of 2018), Sec. 14: at least three monthly contributions in the 12-month period immediately preceding the semester of sickness; confinement of more than three days; notice to the employer within five calendar days after the start of confinement; late notice means the confinement is deemed to start not earlier than the fifth day immediately preceding the date of notification; daily benefit of 90% of the average daily salary credit, up to 120 days a year.

Excuse letter mistakes that turn an absence into a problem
| The mistake | Why it hurts | Do this instead |
|---|---|---|
| Writing "I was absent yesterday" with no date | HR cannot match the letter to your time record | Give the exact date or date range |
| Not calling in before the shift | Many codes punish a no-call, no-show more than the absence itself | Text or call first; mention the time in the letter |
| A long, emotional story | Buries the facts and invites questions | Two factual sentences; keep medical details general |
| Promising a medical certificate you do not have | A missing attachment looks like an invented reason | Attach it now, or say when you will submit it |
| Leaving out how to charge the day | HR applies the default, often leave without pay | Choose sick leave, vacation leave or leave without pay |
| Submitting days or weeks later | Looks like a response to a warning, not an explanation | Hand it in on the day you return |
| Rounding your arrival time down | The biometrics will show the real time | Copy the time from the time record |
| Not keeping a received copy | You cannot prove you explained the absence | Ask your supervisor to sign and date your copy, or keep the sent email |
Excuse letter vs leave letter vs reply to a Notice to Explain
Three documents look alike and are often confused. They have different readers and different stakes, so pick the right one.
| Document | When you use it | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Excuse letter (this page) | After a missed day or late arrival, or to ask in advance | Explains the absence and asks how to charge it |
| Leave letter | To apply for sick, vacation, emergency, maternity or unpaid leave | Formal leave application with dates and return-to-work day; for sickness, choose the Sick leave tab |
| Reply to Notice to Explain | When HR has charged you in writing with an offence | Your defence in the disciplinary process, point by point |
| AWOL explanation letter | When you were absent for days without notice and HR has written to you | Explains the absence and states that you intend to return |
If a Notice to Explain arrives, do not answer with another excuse letter. The reply needs a different structure: each charge quoted, your answer to each, your evidence listed, and a request for a hearing if you want one. Attach the excuse letters you already filed. You can draft it with the reply to Notice to Explain generator.
When the problem is the employer: wrong deductions and refused leave
Sometimes the dispute runs the other way: HR deducts more than the time you missed, refuses to let you use leave credits you have earned, or refuses to pay out unused service incentive leave when you leave the company. Raise it first in a short, dated letter to HR with the payslip figures. If that fails, the next step is a free Request for Assistance under the Single Entry Approach (SEnA) at DOLE, a 30-day conciliation period; unsettled money claims go on to the DOLE Regional Office or the NLRC. The DOLE complaint guide explains each step, and a SEnA request can be prepared on this site.
- 1
Write to HR
State the payroll period, the deduction shown and the amount you believe is correct, with your excuse letter and leave form attached.
- 2
Ask for the computation
Request the daily or per-minute rate used and the rule in the code of conduct that supports it.
- 3
File a SEnA request
If HR does not correct it, file online through DOLE ARMS or at the nearest DOLE office. Filing is free.
- 4
Go to the proper office
If conciliation fails, you are referred to the office that handles your claim, usually the DOLE Regional Office or the NLRC.
Excuse letter in Tagalog: tips for a natural Filipino letter
A Tagalog excuse letter is as acceptable as an English one in most offices, and some supervisors prefer it. Use "po" naturally (once or twice per sentence is plenty), address your supervisor as "Mahal na Ginang Garcia:" or "Mahal na Ginoong Reyes:", and close with "Lubos na gumagalang,". Keep office terms in English the way Filipinos say them: sick leave credits, medical certificate, shift, leave without pay, Notice to Explain. The generator's Tagalog tab titles the letter "Liham ng Paumanhin para sa Pagliban" for absences and "Liham ng Paumanhin sa Pagkahuli" for late arrivals.

Frequently asked questions
+How do I write an excuse letter for work?
Address it to your immediate supervisor, add a subject line with the date, then state the day you missed, the reason in one or two factual sentences, when you notified your supervisor, and the proof you attached. Ask for the day to be charged to sick or vacation leave credits or treated as leave without pay. Close with "Respectfully yours,", sign over your printed name and keep a received copy.
+What is a good reason for an excuse letter for being absent?
Any real reason you can support: illness, a family emergency, a medical appointment, a typhoon or transport suspension, or an urgent personal or government matter. What makes it acceptable is not the reason alone but the proof and the notice. Attach a medical certificate, receipt or advisory, and mention that you called or texted your supervisor before your shift. Company codes decide which reasons are excused.
+How do I write an excuse letter for being late?
Give the date, your scheduled shift start and the time on the biometrics or bundy clock, then the cause in one or two sentences, such as a flood or a broken-down bus. Mention when you warned your supervisor and attach proof if you have it. Add one concrete step to avoid a repeat and accept that the time missed may be deducted from pay under company policy.
+Is an excuse letter required by law in the Philippines?
No. The Labor Code does not require or prescribe an excuse letter. Attendance rules come from your company's code of conduct, which may require a call-in before the shift, a written explanation on return and a medical certificate after a set number of sick days. Following those rules protects you, because repeated unexcused absences can lead to discipline and, in serious cases, dismissal after due process.
+Can I be fired for being absent or late?
A single absence or late arrival is normally a minor offence under company rules. Habitual absenteeism or tardiness without valid reason can be treated as gross and habitual neglect of duties under Article 297 of the Labor Code, a just cause for dismissal. Even then, the employer must give a Notice to Explain, a real chance to answer, and a written decision before dismissing you.
+Do I need a medical certificate for one day of sick leave?
It depends on your company policy. The Labor Code does not set a medical certificate rule for ordinary sick leave, so handbooks decide; many require one for absences of two or more consecutive days, and some require one for any sick day. If you have one, attach it. For the SSS sickness benefit you will need medical proof for the more than three days of confinement.
+What happens if I notify my employer late for SSS sickness benefit?
Your claim is shortened, not cancelled. RA 11199, Section 14, treats the confinement as starting not earlier than the fifth day before the date you notified your employer, so days before that are not paid. Notice is not needed if you were confined in a hospital or got sick or injured at work. To be safe, notify in writing within five calendar days of the first day of sickness.
+Can I write an excuse letter in Tagalog?
Yes. A Tagalog or Filipino excuse letter is accepted in most Philippine offices. Use "Mahal na Ginang" or "Mahal na Ginoong" with the supervisor's surname and a colon, write the facts politely with "po", keep terms like sick leave credits and medical certificate in English, and close with "Lubos na gumagalang,". The generator's Tagalog tab writes the full letter for absences and late arrivals.
+Will I still be paid if my absence is excused?
Excused does not automatically mean paid. Under the general no work, no pay rule, an absence is paid only if it is charged to paid leave: service incentive leave, or sick or vacation leave granted by your company or CBA. If you have no credits left, an excused absence is usually recorded as leave without pay, while an unexcused one may also count towards discipline.
+How many days do I have to submit an excuse letter after an absence?
No law fixes the period; your company handbook does. Most require the letter and leave form on the day you return or within one or two working days. Submit it as early as you can, with proof attached, and keep a received copy. A letter filed weeks later is weaker evidence if your attendance is ever questioned in a Notice to Explain.
+Can I ask in advance to be excused from work?
Yes, and it is the better course whenever you know about the absence ahead of time, for example a graduation, a court date or a scheduled procedure. Use the Advance notice version, give the date, the reason and how your work will be covered, and ask for the day to be charged to vacation leave. Follow up in writing if you have no approval two working days before.
+What is the difference between an excuse letter and a leave letter?
An excuse letter explains an absence or late arrival and asks how it should be treated; it is usually written after the fact. A leave letter is a formal application for a type of leave, such as sick, vacation, emergency or maternity leave, with start and return dates. Many companies want both: the excuse letter for your supervisor and the leave application for HR and payroll.
